FAYETTEVILLE - The 15th-ranked University of Arkansas men's cross country team returns to action Saturday morning for the running of the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville. The men's collegiate 10K race is scheduled for a 9:45 a.m. (CT) start at Agri Park. The home meet marks the final competition for the Razorbacks before the Southeastern Conference Championship meet.
"We're excited to run this weekend," head coach Chris Bucknam said. "The weather looks like it will be great. We're coming off a good performance at Oklahoma State so we're looking forward to another test. This is our penultimate step before the SEC Championships. That's always important so we're looking to have a good meet this weekend."
In its first two races of the season, Arkansas has been led by junior Eric Fernandez. The Ballwin, Mo., native owns the top 8,000-meter time in the conference with his 24:13.80 performance at the Cowboy Jamboree. In addition to Fernandez, the Razorbacks' top-seven scoring lineup through the first two meets has featured Duncan Phillips, Cameron Efurd, Rick Elliott, Aaron Hamilton, Chuol Dey and Patrick Rono.
In the team's last outing, Arkansas ran to a fifth-place finish at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. Four of the Razorbacks' top-five scorers finished inside the top 33. For his effort in the race, Rono was named the SEC Freshman of the Week. The Chile Pepper Festival will mark the team's first 10K of the season.
Saturday's event is scheduled to see 40 teams toe the starting line. Along with No. 15 Arkansas, the meet will feature top-ranked and defending champion Oklahoma State and No. 3 Oklahoma. The Razorbacks will also contend with SEC foe LSU and South Central region teams from Arkansas-Little Rock, Baylor, Texas-Pan American, Texas-San Antonio and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"There's an energy level here that you don't find at other cross country races," Bucknam said. "That's why this meet will always be circled on our schedule. It feels like a Relay meet. It feels like Drake. It feels like Penn. It's a spectacle. There's no question about it."
The awards ceremony for the collegiate races is set for 11:05 a.m. The men's collegiate 10K is just one of 10 races on the 2011 Chile Pepper Festival schedule. The event will also feature an Open division race, a fun run/walk and six junior high and senior high school races.
