FAYETTEVILLE – For the second time in as many weeks, Cale Wallace has been recognized by the Southeastern Conference office. The Cypress, Texas, native was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for his showing at the Texas A&M Triangular. In this week’s national poll, the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team continues its reign as the No. 1 team in the country.

Wallace collected his second win in as many weeks with a win Saturday at 3,000 meters during the Texas A&M Triangular. He led a 1-2 finish, along with teammate Cameron Efurd, for the Razorbacks in the event. Wallace finished the race with a time of 8:21.27. Already the conference leader in the mile, Wallace has the fourth-fastest time at 3,000 meters in the SEC and the best by a freshman.

“One thing I always liked about Cale while we were recruiting him was his energy and enthusiasm,” head coach Chris Bucknam said. “He has a lack of fear when it comes to good competition. It’s panned out for us so far. He’s a real hard worker, loves to compete and shows great range. We feel like he’s a good guy to have on our team and he’s just going to keep getting better.”

In the Jan. 22 release of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) top 25, Arkansas maintains its top spot in the national poll. The Razorbacks lead a sweep of the top three spots occupied by SEC teams. Overall, the conference has seven ranked teams including five inside the top 10.

In their last outing, the Razorbacks collected five event wins, four personal bests and a meet record at the Texas A&M Triangular. During the tri-meet competition also featuring Texas A&M and LSU, Arkansas picked up wins from Wallace at 3,000 meters, Tarik Batchelor in the triple jump, Caleb Cross in the 60-meter hurdles, Kevin Lazas in the pole vault and Tomas Squella at 800 meters.

“It was great to see Tarik Batchelor back on the runway,” Bucknam said. “He missed last year with an injury and came back in the triple jump last weekend with a solid jump. We didn’t have him at a full approach or coming down at full speed. We want to gradually get him back to full speed during the season. It was great to see Tarik. It was an emotional lift for all of us to see him competing again.”

Lazas’ clearance of 5.27m/17-3.5 in the pole vault set the Texas A&M dual-meet record and moved the Razorback junior multi-event specialist into sixth place on the program’s all-time list. Arkansas finished second in the Triangular team standings with 99 points. Two weeks into the season, the Razorbacks have three SEC leaders—Squella (800m), Wallace (mile) and Raymond Higgs (long jump)—and one NCAA leader in Higgs.

Arkansas next hosts the Razorback Team Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville. The two-day, 11-team competition will be held Jan. 25-26 and feature six teams ranked in this week’s coaches’ poll.
