Gymnastics posts good road numbers at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – Freshman Sydnie Dillard nailed her front aerial to a one-handed back-hand spring to claim the beam title, as the No. 20 University of Arkansas gymnastics team (1-5, 0-4 SEC) was outscored by the No. 7 LSU Tigers (7-2, 3-1 SEC)  196.825-195.625.

“We had a good road score tonight,” co-head coach René Lyst said. “We had a couple of mistakes as far as not holding handstands and hitting parts of routines, but at the same time we did not have a fall or have to count a fall tonight.”

In rotation one, Arkansas posted a 48.875 to start off the meet, anchored by senior Amy Borsellino with a 9.825. Junior Katherine Grable would add a 9.80, followed by junior Shelby Salmon and freshmen Keara Glover and Erin Freier each with 9.75’s.

LSU would post a 49.400 to take the lead after rotation one on the vault, led by junior Sarie Morrison with a perfect 10.00.

On the vault, Arkansas recorded a 48.800 with a pair of 9.80’s from Grable and Freier. Senior Kelci Lewis added a 9.75 followed by Borsellino and freshman Heather Elswick with a 9.725 each.

LSU scored a 49.325 on the bars led by Morrison with a 9.90. The Tigers would hold the lead of 98.725-97.675 half-way through the meet.

On the floor, Arkansas picked up a 49.000 led by Grable and Dillard with a 9.825 each. Borsellino added a 9.80 for her routine followed by junior Baille Zumwalde and Elswick each with a 9.775.

LSU would score a 48.675 on the beam to lead the Razorbacks 147.400-146.675 after three rotations.

On the beam, Arkansas posted a 48.95 behind a 9.85 from Dillard to claim the event title. Freier also added a 9.825 followed by Glover and Grable with a 9.775 each. 

LSU would post a 49.425 on the floor to take the meet 196.825-195.625

“We are continuing to grow every weekend,” Lyst said. “Beam and floor are our strengths and it was nice to finish out the meet very strong on those events. The gymnasts worked hard throughout the meet and it was nice to see us finish with those two events and hit all four events for the meet.”

The Razorbacks will return to competition next Friday, Feb. 22 in Barnhill Arena against Alabama.
