FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team swept Sunday’s doubleheader against SIU-Edwardsville and closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with an 8-6 record.

The Razorbacks swept doubles play in their first match, with seniors Hall Fess and Pete Thomason winning their sixth consecutive match with an 8-3 victory at the No. 1 position. Freshman Juan Marino and sophomore Santiago Munoz also recorded an 8-3 victory, clinching the doubles point for the Razorbacks. Arkansas has won the doubles point in three consecutive matches.

Arkansas headed into singles play leading SIU-Edwardsville 1-0. Senior Hall Fess was the first Razorback to record a victory, knocking off his opponent 6-3, 6-4 on court 1. Fess was quickly followed by Marino at court 2, Munoz at the No. 4 position and Lee on court 3. Thomason dropped his first but won the second, forcing a tiebreaker match that he carried his momentum into, winning 10-3. The Razorbacks finished the first match of the day with a 6-1 victory.

The second match of the day was over quickly in the Razorbacks’ favor, with a quick 4-0 singles sweep to clinch the victory and a 2-1 weekend record. Fess jumped out to another early victory in the No. 1 singles position, taking down his opponent 6-0, 6-4. Freshman Jacob Herndon bounced back from a loss in the first match to win on court 6 in a 7-5 tiebreaker first set and dominating 6-2 second. Munoz and Lee secured the last two victories and points needed to finish the match for Arkansas. Marino and Thomason were ahead at the Nos. 2 and 5 singles positions before their matches were suspended.

Arkansas will open SEC play Friday at 2 p.m. against Vanderbilt at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
