DES MOINES, Iowa - University of Arkansas men's track and field team members Cameron Efurd and Phillip Butler, Jr., are among a group of student-athletes selected to attend the 2012 NCAA Career in Sports Forum. The event begins Thursday and continues through Sunday in Indianapolis, Ind. Of the 650 applicants, only 300 were chosen by the NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs Committee to attend the event. Student-athletes were selected from across the country and from all three NCAA divisions.
"We are proud of Phillip and Cameron for being selected to represent Arkansas at this event," Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Student-Athlete Development Eric Wood said. "I've attended it before and it is an excellent opportunity for them to learn about the behind-the-scene aspects of coaching or athletics administration. I'm looking forward to hearing about their experience."
Butler, a triple jumper from Coffeyville, Kan., just completed his junior season with the Razorbacks. He is a business major at Arkansas and was named to the 2011 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. Efurd is a long-distance specialist from Rogers, Ark., and just finished his sophomore season with the track and field team. He is enrolled in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and was also part of the 2011 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll.
The NCAA Career in Sports Forum is a four-day event through which selected student-athletes explore and are educated on careers in sports, with a primary focus on intercollegiate athletics. The participants are given an education opportunity to learn and gain valuable exposure to careers in sports, specifically in the areas of coaching, administration and sports entertainment.
The participating student-athletes will examine key functions of a coach or administrator within athletics, including foundational skills such as communication, networking, recruiting, managing culture, transitioning and budgeting. Additionally, the Forum dispels myths about careers in athletes, as well as facilitates the opportunity to obtain information from current and future athletics professionals.
