FAYETTEVILLE – For their individual performances during the top-ranked Razorbacks’ season opener, Raymond Higgs and Cale Wallace have been recognized by the Southeastern Conference office. Higgs was named the SEC Co-Field Athlete of the Week while Wallace earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

Higgs was a double-winner in the long jump and triple jump during the top-ranked Razorbacks’ season-opening dual win against third-ranked Texas. He began his indoor campaign with an SEC- and NCAA-leading mark in the long jump of 7.95m/26-1. With the personal-best jump, Higgs moved into ninth place on the program’s all-time list. He also won the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 15.15m/49-8.5 which is the second-best jump in the SEC and ranked No. 10 in the NCAA.

“Raymond started off the season with a nice jump (in the long jump)” head coach Chris Bucknam said. “He wasn’t at his full approach for the meet. I think he was at a 10-step approach and he usually comes from farther back. It’s not the stop speed at the board that we’ll see at the end of the year so for him to jump 26 feet is a good effort with a nation-leading jump.”

Wallace, the 2012 SEC Cross Country Freshman of the Year, finished second in his first collegiate indoor mile with an SEC-leading time of 4:08.63. He was the top-performing Razorback in the race, earning three points toward Arkansas’ seven-point win over No. 3 Texas in the dual meet. Nationally, Wallace’s time ranks fourth in the NCAA and is the top mark by a freshman.

“(Cale) is a real hard worker,” Bucknam said. “He’s a great competitor and not afraid to get out there and race. We originally had him running the 800 but we pulled a couple guy so we had to move him up. He said ‘coach, I’ll run whatever you need me to run.’ We got a taste of it during cross country. He’s a tough competitor, light on his feet and he’s going to be an outstanding runner for us over the next three and a half years.”

In its season opener, the No. 1 University of Arkansas men’s track and field team posted a dual-meet win over third-ranked Texas at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks had nine event wins on their way to an 85-78 dual victory. In addition to Higgs, Arkansas’ list of event winners came from Caleb Cross at 60 meters, Akheem Gauntlett at 200 meters, Anton Kokorin at 400 meters, Tomas Squella at 1,000 meters, Anthony May II in the high jump, Andrew Irwin in the pole vault and the 4x400-meter relay team.

Arkansas returns to action next weekend with the Texas A&M Triangular in College Station, Texas. The Razorbacks will be joined at Saturday’s competition by No. 10 LSU and host and fourth-ranked Texas A&M. The head-to-head event will be scored on a 7-5-4-3-2-1 scale in individual events and a 7-5-4 scale in the relay events.
