FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas men’s track and field and cross country teams finished third in the 2014 John McDonnell Division I Program of the Year standings, presented by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award is awarded annually to the most outstanding cross country/track & field programs in each of the NCAA’s three divisions for each gender.

“Obviously we try to win the award every year,” said Head Coach Chris Bucknam. “Hats off to Oregon for the great year they had. Finishing in the top three in the nation is something we take pride in. Our goal is to be highly successful in all three of our disciplines – cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. We won it last year and it has become the goal standard for us in terms of measuring the overall strength of our program. To be in the top three with Oregon and Oklahoma State, we’re in good company. By finishing in the top three sends a message that we are committed to excellence in all three of those disciplines. We will continue to strive to win that trophy again next year.”

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships.  Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, etc.) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.

Arkansas finished third with 23.5 points following a runner-up indoor showing, a ninth-place result outdoors, and a 12th-place finish in cross country. In addition the Razorbacks won the Southeastern Conference Indoor Title, earning Bucknam the SEC Head Coach of the Year award.
