CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of Arkansas senior Victoria Vela shot a one-over 73 leading the No. 30 Razorback women’s golf team to a tie for 10th place after second round action at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., Saturday.

Arkansas finished the day with a 297, four strokes better than their first round.  They are 22-over with a 598 and are ninth overall.

Vela, a Mansfield, Texas, native, opened play Friday with a 72 adding her 73 today for a 145 and a tie for seventh overall.

“I’m very pleased with Vickie’s effort and execution again today,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor.  “She worked really hard and is committed to the game plan and it’s great to see her results reflex that.

“We got out to a super slow start but had a really strong comeback,” she continued.”

Junior Emma Lavy opened with a four-over 76 in the second tournament of the season.  Lavy was plus four on the front nine and picked up her fifth bogey on the 12th hole.  The Fayetteville, Ark., native shot even par in the second round with a 72 for a 148.  She is tied for 20th overall

Lavy got out to a rough start with three consecutive bogeys.  She birdied the seventh hole, a par four, and turned at two-over.  Lavy played 10, 11 and 12 even before birding 13 and 17 to finish even.

“Vickie and Emma are doing an awesome job of being leaders this week,” Estes-Taylor said.  “I couldn’t be more pleased with their attitudes and efforts.”

Freshman Gabriela Lopez matched Lavy in in the first round shooting two over on each side for a 76.  Lopez bettered that with a 74 in the second round for 150.  Lopez posted three birdies on the front nine and started strong.  Lopez is tied for 31st.

Emily Tubert played plus three on both sides finishing her day with a 78.  The Burbank, Calif., native shot 77 in the first round and is tied for 5tth overall with 155.

Freshman Regina Plasencia rounded out the Arkansas scores with an 83.  She is in the clubhouse with a two-day 161 and is tied for 83rd.

“We finished very strong today,” Estes-Taylor said.  “We just have to put two nines together.  We are doing a lot of great stuff.  We just have to come out tomorrow and give it all we’ve got.”
