Match Notes - Yale

FAYETTEVILLE - The No. 37 University of Arkansas women's tennis team travels to New Haven, Conn., this Sunday to compete against the No. 24 Yale Bulldogs. Arkansas has gotten off to a strong start this season, opening the year with a 4-1 record.

With seven freshmen in the lineup, the young talent has shown earlier on. The freshman class is a combined 17-5 in singles, and a 9-2 doubles record from three new additions who joined the team for the spring season. The Razorbacks are led by lone senior Claudine Paulson, who is undefeated this spring. Paulson is 5-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles.

Last weekend, Arkansas went 1-1 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. After dropping a tough battle against No. 14 Northwestern, the Razorbacks upset No. 32 Washington State 5-2 on Saturday to earn a split of their matches. The victory over a veteran Cougars squad gave Arkansas head Coach Michael Hegarty his 125th career win, moving him to the top of the list for victories in program history.

"Overall we have to be very pleased with how we played," Hegarty. "We played two very good matches, and we played really well both days. We showed up and we were not out of our element. We've had some really good contributions from numerous players. In this early period, we're in good position. I like the way this team is heading."

Yale is 2-1 this season, and hosts Florida International on Friday before facing the Razorbacks on Sunday.  The No. 24 Bulldogs faced two SEC teams at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, upsetting No. 19 Ole Miss before falling to Vanderbilt.

"We know Yale pretty well," Hegarty said. "They were here last year and beat us 4-3 in a very competitive match, and they return bulk of that team. We have a handle on who they are and now we go to their place. It's a very exciting match, and it's going to make us better."

Play begins Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (CST). Full recaps and results will be available online following play.
