TULSA, Okla. – The No. 8/10 University of Arkansas women’s golf team opened the 2013-14 season today at the Dale McNamara NCAA Fall Preview at the Tulsa Country Club, in Tulsa, Okla., shooting 291 to tie for 12th after first round action.

The Razorbacks are just 13 strokes back of the leader and seven strokes outside of the top five with two rounds to play in the first event of the fall.

“Obviously this is not the start we are looking for,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said, “but we learned a lot about this course today.  Have to be really specific with our plan especially when dealing with the wind.  We will be even more prepared tomorrow with our shot selection and the conditions.  We are going to go out and hit one shot at a time and stick to the plan.  We are not far off from the lead, we just have to go out and grind and move up leaderboard.”

Sophomore Regina Plasencia leads the Razorbacks with an opening round even par 70 on the 6,168 yard course.  Plasencia opened her round with a birdie on the first hole but fell to one-over with back-to-back bogeys on the second and third holes.

The Guadalajara, Mexico, native was steady for the rest of the front nine turning one-over.  She picked up her second birdie of the round on the 10th hole moving back to even where she would remain finishing with eight consecutive par holes for her 70.

“I’m really proud of how Regina played today,” Estes-Taylor said.  “She has really worked hard and did a good job out there today.”

Sophomore Gabriela Lopez posted a two-over 72 and is tied for 31st after the first round.  Lopez, a Mexico City, Mexico, native, was two-over when she turned with bogeys on one, six and nine and a birdie on the par four fifth hole.  She finished her round with nine consecutive par holes for her 72.

Senior All-American Emily Tubert is tied for 38th overall with a three-over 73.  Tubert played the front nine even with a bogey on the fifth hole and a birdie on the eighth. She put together five consecutive par holes on nine-13 but bogeyed the 14th, 17th and 18th holes of the round.

Freshman Summar Roachell, playing in her first collegiate event, is tied for 56th after a first-round 76.  Roachell, a Conway, Ark., native, had birdies on the 14th and 17th holes and finished strong with a birdie and a par in her round.  Senior Emma Lavy rounds out the Arkansas scores.  The Fayetteville, Ark., native shot 78 and is tied for 65th overall.

Fifteenth-ranked Oklahoma State leads the field with a first round 278 followed by No. 4 Oklahoma with 282, No. 7 Arizona and No. 2 Duke tied for third with 283, No. 10 Arizona State in fifth with 284, No. 14 Stanford with 286, No. 9 Vanderbilt with 287, No. 19 Georgia and top-ranked Southern California tied for eighth with 288, No. 16 North Carolina with 289 and No. 3 Alabama with 290.  Number eight Arkansas is tied with No. 13 Tulane with a 291, with No. 21 Texas at 292 and host No. 62 Tulsa rounds out the field with 316.

Play continues Tuesday and Wednesday.  For more information on Arkansas women’s golf, follow @RazorbackWGolf on Twitter.
