CARMEL, Ind. –
Led by senior Sebastian Cappelen
who leads the 75-player field through 36 holes, the No. 12 University of Arkansas men’s golf team turned in the low round of the day with a three-under 285 in the afternoon to finish Monday in sole possession of fourth place at the 14-team Crooked Stick Intercollegiate hosted by Indiana.
The only player in the field to card a pair of under-par rounds on the par 72, 7290-yard Crooked Stick Golf Club layout, Cappelen will enter Tuesday’s final round with a two-stroke lead. In the team standings, the Razorbacks gained at least 10 strokes on 11 of the 13 teams in the afternoon and sit just six strokes back of first place and fellow SEC member No. 8 Georgia.
Crooked Stick Golf Club yielded just nine under-par rounds on the day, four of which came from the five-man Arkansas lineup, highlighted by three in the afternoon. The Razorbacks’ 285 was the best round of the day from the 14-team field by five strokes. In three tournaments this season in which it has played a 36-hole opening day, Arkansas is a combined eight-under in the afternoon.
Adding to Cappelen’s one-under 71 in the afternoon was senior Blake Biddle
with a three-under 69, which was the lowest round of the day by the 75-player field. Junior Thomas Sorensen
made it three under-par scores in round two with a one-under 71, while redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford
capped things with a two-over 74. It marks the second time this fall Arkansas has had three players under-par in the same round.
Cappelen’s day began with five birdies in his opening 11 holes en route to one of just three under-par rounds turned in by the field in the morning. Just as he did in the day’s first round, Cappelen began his afternoon with a birdie on the par 5, 5th hole and went on to finish the day eight-under on the par 5s, carding a birdie on all eight played. His two-round 70-(-2)-71(-1)/141(-3) gives him a two-stroke lead over Georgia’s Nicholas Reach.
Sophomore Taylor Moore
carded the team’s second-best score in round one with a two-over 74 and is tied for 24th overall. Moore leads the field in par 3 scoring at two-under. Sorensen’s 71 in the afternoon was a 10-stroke improvement from the morning for the Denmark native who now has five par or lower rounds out of eight played this season. Biddle’s first-under par round as a Razorback moved him up 33 spots on the leaderboard into a tie with Sorensen for 31st position. Crawford’s 74 moved him up 12 spots from round one into a tied for 46th place.
Arkansas will begin Tuesday’s final round at 9:20 a.m., playing alongside Florida and the host Hoosiers. Live scoring is available through www.GolfStat.com or www.ArkansasRazorbacks.com, while in-round Twitter updates can be found by following @RazorbackMGolf.
