SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The seventh-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team shot a 279 and is in second while seniors Emma Lavy and Emily Tubert are tied for third in the first round of the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, Sunday.

“We got off to a strong start today,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor.  “We’ve been really working mentally and focusing on getting out to a hot start. The conditions were really favorable today and I’m really proud of our seniors.  Two 68s out of them is great.  The rest of the group just really fought hard.  Regina had two birdies in her last holes.  It was a group effort today.

“The team stayed really patient and we are right where we want to be and in contention,” Estes-Taylor continued.  “We have two days to go and we need to stick to the plan and take it one stroke at a time.  I’m proud of our start but we have to put it behind us and get back to work and get out to a good start the next two days,”

Seniors Emma Lavy and Emily Tubert are tied for third place overall shooting 68s. Lavy, a Fayetteville, Ark., native, opened strong with three consecutive birdies on a busy scorecard. She bogeyed the sixth and 10th holes but rallied with a birdie on 11 and an eagle on the 13th hole as her solid round continued.

Lavy finished with a birdie on the 15th hole, a bogey on 16 and back-to-back pars to close with a 68.

Tubert’s, a Burbank, Calif., native, wasn’t nearly as colorful.  She opened with a bogey on the first hole then birdied five, seven and eight to turn two-under.  She added birdies on the 13th and 18th holes for her four-under 68.

Sophomore Regina Plasencia was also under par firing a two-under 70 in the first round. Plasencia began her round with four par holes before counting a four on the par five fifth hole to turn one-under.  She moved to even with a bogey on the 11th but a strong finish saw her birdie the 16th and 17th holes to close with a 70. Plasencia is tied for 13th overall

Sophomore Gabriela Lopez posted a one-over 73 and is tied for 39th while freshman Summar Roachell is tied for 49th with a 74. Lopez opened with eight consecutive par holes before a bogey on the ninth hole.  She moved back even with a birdie on the 11th.  She remained even through the 13th hole when she counted back-to-back bogeys.  Lopez got one shot back on the 16th hole and finished with a pair of pairs for her 73.

Roachell opened her round with a bogey and counted a two on the par three eighth hole turning even.  She would remain even through the 17th but suffered back-to-back bogeys to finish with a 74.

Fifth-ranked Oklahoma is the first round leader shooting a 10-under 278.  The seventh-ranked Razorbacks are second at nine under with a 279 followed by No. 17 Florida with 280, No. 46 Texas A&M with 281 and No. 25 LSU and host UTSA are tied for fifth with 285.

The rest of the field includes No. 43 SMU with 287, No. 44 Florida State and No. 49 TCU with 289, No. 40 Louisville, Tennessee and No. 18 Tulane with 290, Texas State with 292, Texas with 295 and Baylor with 297.

Play continues with second round action Monday.
