SAN ANTONIO, Texas – University of Arkansas sophomore Gabriela Lopez fired a second round 68 leading the seventh-ranked Razorback women’s golf team  to a 283 and the lead at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, Monday.

Lopez, a Mexico City, Mexico native, joins seniors Emma Lavy and Emily Tubert who both shot 68 in the first round.  Lopez began her day with four consecutive par holes before a birdie on the fifth.  She birdied the seventh hole as well turning two-under.

Lopez added three more par holes, five in a row, and then birdied 13 and 15 moving to four-under in the round.  The lone blemish, a bogey on the 16th, was erased with a birdie on the 17th where Lopez cared a two on the par three.

Lopez opened play with a 73 and is tied for eighth overall with 141.

“We were so solid today,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor.  “It was group effort in some tough conditions.  Gaby was very consistent today.  She is a tremendous ball striker and has a lot of rounds where she hits a lot of greens.  She stayed patient out there and converted when she could.  Gaby works really hard at her game and she is committed to the process of hitting one shot at time.  When she does that, she has day’s like today.”

Seniors Lavy and Tubert again matched each other with one-under 71s in the second round.  The pair are tied for fourth and in the clubhouse with 139.

Lavy, a Fayetteville, Ark., native, had five birdies, three bogeys and an eagle in her round Monday.  She opened play with three consecutive birdies and finished strong with back-to-back par holes for Arkansas.

Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native pared nine of her first 10 holes mixing it up on the back nine with birdies on 11, 13 and 17 and a bogey on the 15th hole.

“Both Emma and Emily fought hard and stayed steady today, especially with conditions tough conditions,” Estes-Taylor said.  “They move the tees around a lot on the course so you really have to stay focused and true to game plan.

“We have done some swing changes with Emma and actually changed her irons and we put those into play this week,” Estes-Taylor continued. “It is a great boos of confidence and she is swinging the club really well right now.  She is working really hard and it’s great to see that pay off late this fall.”

Sophomore Regina Plasencia is tied for 17th overall after counting a one-over 73 for 143 (70-73) and freshman Summar Roachell is in the clubhouse with a 152 with rounds of 74-78.

“We are in perfect position to do good tomorrow,” Estes-Taylor said.  “We are going to focus on our goals and stay true to the plan and see what happens.”

The @RazorbackWGolf team was one shot behind No. 5 Oklahoma and one in front of No. 17 Florida after first round action but took a two-stroke lead with a five-under 283 under today’s windy conditions.  Arkansas leads the field with a 562 with the Sooners and No. 25 LSU tied for second with 564.  The top five includes No. 46 Texas A*M with 567, and host UTSA with 571.

The rest of the field includes No. 17 Florida with 572, No. 49 TCU with 574, No. 43 SMU with 578, NO. 18 Tulane with 581, Texas State with 584, No. 40 Louisville with 586, No. 44 Florida State with 590, Baylor with 592, Tennessee with 594 and Texas with 599.

Play concludes Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.  For more information on Arkansas women’s golf, follow @RazorbackWGolf on Twitter.
