ALBUQUERQUE – The No. 2 Razorbacks posted record-setting performances as they took home their first title of the meet, as Jarrion Lawson made a dominating final leap on his way to being crowned the 2014 Indoor Long Jump Champion. Lawson’s explosive final jump of 27-6.5 gave Arkansas 10 points on their way to a fifth-place team ranking after day one.

After edging his way into the finals, Lawson took full advantage of the sixth and final round, dominating the field with a world-leading 27-6.5 jump, a huge final leap that took him a foot further than his competitors, to take home the NCAA Title.

His NCAA-leading jump takes down his previous personal record of 26-2.75 set at the Tyson Invitational earlier this season. With his mark, Lawson ranks No. 4 all-time in NCAA history and No. 7 in all-time U.S. history. Lawson's jump just missed the NCAA Championship meet record of 8.48 set by the legendary Carl Lewis in 1981. He currently ranks No. 2 all-time in Arkansas history.

Defending heptathlon national champion Kevin Lazas wrapped up day one in second place with 3,315 points, just 43 points out of the first-place spot. A 6.97 finish in the 60-meter dash, followed by a mark of 23-10.25 in the long jump gave the senior a second-place standing through the first two events. A dramatic performance in the shot put moved Lazas in the leading spot, landing a third-attempt 46-7.25 mark after fouling on his first two attempts. In the fourth and final event of the day, the senior just missed 6-8 mark attempting a new personal record in the high jump, wrapping up with a 6-6.75 clearance and settling in the second-place spot to end day one.

The Razorbacks will look to score pivotal points in Saturday’s finals to defend their national title, qualifying three from Friday’s preliminaries. SEC Freshman Runner of the Year Omar McLeod set a new Arkansas record as he finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a nation-best time of 7.57 to qualify for Saturday’s finals. McLeod’s previous personal best was 7.70, his runner-up performance at the SEC Championships. The mid-distance duo of Tomas Squella (1:49.00) and Patrick Rono (1:51.97) will appear in Saturday’s finals of the 800-meter, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
