Baton Rouge, La.-The University of Arkansas softball team fell in a close 3-2 game to LSU in the final game of the series moving its record to 18-16 on the season 2-12 in the Southeastern Conference. LSU moves to 27-8 on the season 10-1 in the SEC.
"I was really proud of the team today," said head coach Mike Larabee. "They came back fighting and played their hearts out."
LSU got started early bringing home one run in the bottom of the first off of two singles and an error from the Razorbacks.
Arkansas responded in the top of the second when junior Andrea Sullivan blasted a homerun, her second of the season, over the center field wall tying the game at one.
Arkansas displayed some solid defense in the bottom of the second and third forcing LSU to go three-up three-down. Chloe Oprzedek collected two assists to Sullivan to put out two Tigers.
LSU right-fielder Ashley Applegate grabbed a triple in the bottom of the fourth. She was unable to be brought home with a defensive stop by Tori Mort catching a fly ball in center field to end the fourth.
Jayme Gee grabbed her first hit on the weekend when she dropped one in center field for a single. Unfortunately, Rachele Fico collected her fifth strikeout of the day against Mort to end the inning and leaving Gee on base.
The bottom of the fifth inning could have been dangerous for the Razorbacks after pinch hitter Hayward received first off of a walk followed by a single by Andrews. The umpires called Hayward out for leaving early and sent Andrews back to the plate where Kimmy Beasley got her third strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Clarisa Navarro recorded her fifth homerun on the season over the left-field fence in the top sixth to give the Razorbacks the 2-1 lead.
"Clarisa is one of the best shortstops in the country," said Larabee.
LSU came out in the bottom of the sixth and responded with four singles bringing in two runs giving them the 3-2 lead.
The Razorbacks could not put a run on the board in the top of the seventh giving LSU the 3-2 victory.
Arkansas is back in action next weekend when they take on Mississippi State on Friday with a doubleheader at 3/5 p.m.
