FAYETTEVILLE - The No. 42 University of Arkansas men's tennis team dropped its match to No. 37 Auburn 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Dills Indoor Tennis Facility. Arkansas drops to 11-7 and 0-4 in SEC play.
Arkansas's No. 1 doubles pair of Mike Nott and Manfred Jeske had a tough challenge taking on the No.1 doubles team in the country in Auburn's Andreas Mies and Daniel Cochrane. Nott and Jeske stepped up to the challenge and took an early break point to take the lead on the Tigers. The duo unfortunately could not hold on and fell in a long hard fought match 8-6. The win on court one clinched the double point for the Tigers.
Hall Fess and Santiago Munoz were in a third-set tiebreak on court three against Lukas Ollert and Joseph Van Doohen when the point was clinched.
"We came out and played some spirited doubles today," head coach Robert Cox said. "To play that well against the No.1 doubles team in the country shows a lot about Mike and Manfred play."
After the intense doubles match, the Hogs could not get going in singles play dropping five out of the six first sets. Nott was the lone Razorback to take his first set over Lucas Lopasso 6-3. Lopasso responded, taking the second 6-4. Nott finished strong in the third set, taking it 6-3 to give Arkansas its only point on the day. With the victory, Nott has his ninth singles victory of the season.
"I am real proud of Mike Nott staying in there and fighting for the win," Coach Cox said.
Arkansas will continue conference play next weekend when it heads to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M. While in College Station the Razorbacks will also play a match on neutral court against UT-Pan American.
"We are so close to a solid SEC win, we just have to keep pushing and get ready for next weekend," Coach Cox said.
