Naylor advances to one-meter finals at Zones

HOUSTON, Texas – Junior diver Kesha Naylor led the University of Arkansas diving corps on day two at the NCAA Zone Diving competition. Naylor put up big numbers on the one-meter board to advance to the finals where she finished10th overall with a final score of 538.15
“Kesha had a solid prelims performance,” head diving coach Dale Schultz said. “To start the finals she tried too hard to make up some points. It will come down to the tower competition tomorrow and the winner of that will advance to NCAAs.”
Naylor began the competition with strong preliminary dives, increasing her rank more and more with each dive. The Sasketchewan, Can., native advanced from 24th-place after her first dive to a final prelim score of 274.80 for sixth overall. Entering the finals, Naylor tried to make up some ground, but fell short after over-rotating a pair of dives. Naylor nailed her last dive of the finals, a back one and a half somersault and one and a half twist for 50 points, giving her a score of 538.15 and a final rank of 10th.
Freshman Hannah Bortnick was the next Razorback finisher. The freshman put up a final score of 226.45 for 34th overall. Freshman Shelby Bartlett was next up in the ranks, recording a score of 226.15 for a final place of 36th. One of Bartlett’s best dives of the day was an inward one and a half somersault pike, which she scored a 44.40.
Sophomore Meghan Clark finished up her outing on the one-meter board with a final score of 216.15 for 41st overall. Clark was in the hunt to make the finals for much of the competition, but she missed her last two dives, falling out of contention.
The Razorbacks return to the pool tomorrow at 11 a.m., as Bartlett, Naylor and Bortnick will compete on the platform. The trio have just one more chance to qualify for NCAA’s as only seven spots are allocated to divers in Zone D and six spots are already taken.
