FAYETTEVILLE – As preseason workouts continue for the University of Arkansas volleyball team, senior outside hitter Jasmine Norton was selected by COBRA Magazine as a member of the publication’s All-Preseason Third Team. The Razorbacks reported to campus Tuesday and began their practice sessions Wednesday at Barnhill Arena in preparation of the upcoming season.
Earlier in the week, Arkansas was picked to finish third in the Southeastern Conference Western Division while Norton was named to the Preseason All-SEC Team for the third time in her career. Norton is one of six seniors on the 2012 roster along with Roslandy Acosta, Amanda Anderson, Kasey Heckelman, Marci King and Janeliss Torres-Lopez. During Tuesday’s report schedule, the Razorbacks had team meetings and ended the day with team pictures.
Arkansas’ 2012 roster also features six juniors with Emily Helm, Hayley King, Avery Lewis, Clarissa Pavey, Raymariely Santos and Ashley Vazquez; one sophomore in Christa Alvarez; and five freshmen with Monica Bollinger, Liz Fortado, Ana Jusino, Summer Morgan and Adrien Wohlschlaeger. The team is under the direction of fifth-year head coach Robert Pulliza.
The Razorbacks begin their 2012 season Aug. 24-25 with the Arkansas Invitational, the team’s first of two home tournaments during the year. The field for the season-opening event will include UT-Martin, Northwestern State and regional foe Kansas. Arkansas will play 18 home matches in 2012, including seven against teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Last season, Norton was a COBRA Magazine all-region and all-national performer. The publication is dedicated to celebrating the success of volleyball players of African, Samoan and Tongan descent in hopes of encouraging those ethnic groups across the country to pursue the sport.
