FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas volleyball team closes out its 2011 regular season Saturday afternoon with a Southeastern Conference matchup against LSU in Baton Rouge, La. First serve of the Western Division matchup is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (CT) at the Maravich Center. With a victory, the Razorbacks would clinch a share of the SEC Western Division title.
"At this point, we don't do anything different than we've been doing all season," head coach Robert Pulliza said. "The reason we're competing for the Western Division championship is because we've prepared to be our best and play the opponent at hand. That's not going to change now. We're here because of what we've been doing all year long."
Arkansas enters the regular-season finale with an 18-12 overall record and a 10-9 mark in conference play. The Razorbacks trail LSU (18-11, 11-8 SEC) by one game in the division standings. In the first meeting this season between the two teams, the Razorbacks knocked off LSU in straight sets Oct. 26 in Fayetteville. Arkansas' win, televised by ESPNU, snapped an 11-match skid to LSU.
On the season, Jasmine Norton and Kelli Stipanovich lead the team's offensive output with 3.62 and 3.23 kills per set, respectively. Norton trails Yarleen Santiago (1997-99) by four kills for sixth place on the program's career kills list, while Stipanovich is 16 kills behind Eftila Tanellari (1999-01) in the No. 11 spot on that list. As a team this season, Arkansas is hitting .236 and hold its opponent to a .183 hitting percentage. The Razorbacks are second in the SEC with 2.44 blocks per set.
In the all-time series, Arkansas holds a 23-14 advantage over the Tigers including the victory earlier this season. The Razorbacks have won 10 of the 17 matches played in Baton Rouge. Arkansas' last win on the Tigers' home floor came during the 2004 season.
The Razorbacks are coming off a five-set loss to No. 16 Kentucky last weekend in Lexington. Norton led all players with a season-high 27 kills while completing a double-double effort with 14 digs. At the setter position, Raymariely Santos dished out a career-high 61 assists to go along with a match-high 16 digs. Kasey Heckelman led the team's efforts at the next with nine total blocks. Arkansas jumped out to a two-set lead in the match but the Wildcats rallied for the five-set win.
In addition to an interactive blog and live stats, Saturday's match against LSU will be broadcast on KXUA 88.3 FM in Fayetteville. The NCAA Division I Volleyball Selection Show will air Sunday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU.
