– Kasey Fagan
hit a solo home run and Chloe Oprzedek
extended her hitting streak to 12 games Friday but the University of Arkansas softball team lost a 9-2 decision to No. 2/4 Tennessee in both team’s Southeastern Conference opener. With Friday’s result, Arkansas is now 19-7 on the season. Due to a forecast of inclement weather Sunday, the teams will play a doubleheader Saturday with game one set for a 12:30 p.m. (CT) start at Bogle Park.
The visitors scored in each of the first three innings, capping their streak of runs with a grand slam in the top of the third to take an 8-0 lead on the scoreboard. The Razorbacks had early chances with two runners on in each of the first two innings but finally broke through with Fagan’s home run to lead off Arkansas’ half of the third. She is now tied with Devon Wallace
for the team lead with five home runs and takes over the team lead with 27 RBI.
Oprzedek, the next hitter, dropped a bunt down the third-base line for an infield single to push her hitting streak to 12 games. She eventually came around to score the Razorbacks’ second run on a dropped fly ball in left field. Arkansas had further opportunity to add to its score with runners on first and third but Tennessee starter Ellen Renfroe got out of the inning with a strikeout.
In her longest relief appearance of the season, Sydney Wright
kept Tennessee off the scoreboard over the final three innings after allowing one run in the fourth. She finished the game with 4.1 innings of work. Wright benefited from a fourth-inning double play that came with the bases loaded, no outs and a run already across the plate.
