FAYETTEVILLE –Join the University of Arkansas women's basketball team Sunday Feb. 17 and show your support for breast cancer awareness and research along with your support of Razorback athletics.

The University of Arkansas Athletics Department has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen-Ozark Affiliate and sponsors Academy Sports + Outdoors, Mercy and United Healthcare to create a year long initiative to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.

“We are proud to participate in this year-long campaign to aid the fight against breast cancer,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. “By utilizing designated Razorback events, we will be able to raise awareness and provide valuable information about the importance of early detection and treatment. This is a great opportunity to wear your pink, support a great cause and cheer on some of our outstanding Razorback women’s teams.”

Each Razorback women’s athletic team will host a “Pink” event during the 2012-2013 season beginning with soccer Oct. 14, when they hosted Auburn.  The Razorback swimming and diving team took part Oct. 19 with a home meet with Georgia, followed by the Arkansas volleyball team’s Pink game with Alabama Oct. 26 in Barnhill Arena.

The Pink events continued in February with the Razorback gymnastics team when they hosted Florida Feb. 1.  The Razorback women’s basketball team hosts its Pink game Feb. 17 against Missouri.  Softball and women’s golf are also scheduled to have a Pink event.

The women’s cross country and track and field teams will showed their support by wearing the official pink t-shirt at the 24th Annual Chile Pepper Festival in October.

Fans are encouraged to purchase the official pink t-shirt in support of the initiative. The cost is $15 and includes free admission to the Pink events. The t-shirts are available to purchase at Hog Heaven located in Bud Walton Arena and at each sporting venue. A portion of every t-shirt sold will benefit the Susan G. Komen-Ozark Affiliate.
