Klenke finishes fourth in steeplechase

FAYETTEVILLE – Competing at the 2012 USA Junior Track and Field Championships, Shannon Klenke ran to a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday. The Razorback freshman crossed the finish line in a time of 10:57.22. The junior competition is being contested this weekend at the Robert C. Haugh Complex in Bloomington, Ind.

One of five runners to dip below the 11-minute mark, Klenke finished fourth overall and third among collegiate runners in the race. Prior to Friday, her last race was May 25 at the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin. Klenke closes out her freshman campaign with a personal-best time of 10:31.23, a performance she posted at the SEC Championships in May.

Klenke is the first of two Razorback freshmen scheduled to compete this weekend. Chrishuna Williams will race in the first round of the 400 meters Saturday. That race is set for a 4:10 p.m. (CT) start. Should she advance to the next round, the event final will be contested Sunday at 2:15 p.m.

The 2012 USA Junior Track and Field Championships is a showcase event for high school standouts and top college freshman. The meet will serve as a qualifier for this year’s IAAF World Junior Championships that will be held July 10-15 in Barcelona, Spain. The top-two finishers in each event who have met qualifying standards will be invited to compete for Team USA.
