FAYETTEVILLE - First-year soccer head coach Colby Hale doesn't have to wait long to see his team in game-like situations. The Razorbacks have six exhibition games this semester, beginning with two games on Saturday at the University of Tulsa - against Oral Roberts at 12:30 p.m. and Tulsa at 4:30 p.m.
Hale and his staff, assistant coaches Ben Strawbridge and Mario Rincon, have been working with the Razorbacks in preparation for the 2012 campaign.
"The kids are working extremely hard," Hale says. "We have put them in an environment that is pushing them and they are responding well."
The rest of the spring schedule includes a home game against Oklahoma State on April 7 at 1 p.m., the Alumni Game on April 14 at 1 p.m., a trip to Norman to face Oklahoma on April 21 at 2 p.m. and a game against Southeast Missouri State in Springfield on April 28 at 3 p.m.
"These matches will be a good opportunity to test our ability to put some of the things we have been working on into a match situation as well as gauge how we react to outside competition," Hale says. "We have mostly been working on small group defending and our attacking rhythm. It will be great to see how well we are able to apply it to the matches. We have tried to make our spring schedule as competitive as possible, and I think we've done that."
Hale was hired in December after nine years at Central Florida where he was associate head coach. He helped the Knights to 130 wins (130-50-22) with six conference championships (four Conference USA, two Atlantic Sun), seven NCAA Tournament bids and eight wins in the postseason. In seven years in Conference USA, UCF was 56-11-9 with four league titles.
In three years at Oral Roberts University prior to his stint at UCF, Hale helped lead the Golden Eagles to 38 wins and a pair of conference titles. Academically, all 12 teams he's worked with as a coach have recorded team grade point averages of 3.0 or better.
In Hale's nine seasons at UCF, including the last five as associate head coach, the Knights had 19 wins or ties against teams ranked in the top 25, ended the year ranked among the top 25 in the RPI ratings six times and ranked in the top 25 in scoring six times with 398 totals goals scored for an average of 44 per season.
