FAYETTEVILLE - New Arkansas head soccer coach Colby Hale coached his team in a pair of exhibition games over the weekend, including a full 90-minute game victory over host Tulsa.
The Razorbacks played an abbreviated 60-minute game against Oral Roberts on Tulsa's campus and dropped a 1-0 decision in a game with many substitutions. In the full game against Tulsa, Arkansas posted a 2-0 victory.
"The ORU match was pretty typical of a first match," Hale, who was hired in December, says. "There was really little rhythm by either team. I think the players had some nerves and with all the substitutions, it was really just a chance to step on the field against another team and shake off some rust."
All 23 Razorbacks saw action against ORU.
Against Tulsa, freshman Phyllis George scored off an assist from junior Taylor Green and Green scored off an assist from senior Allie Chandler.
"The Tulsa match showed we have the ability to put into place what we have been working on," Hale said. "We simplified things for the second match and they went out and played well. Our team defending was good and we created some good chances. Getting the second goal was a sign that the team's mentality is growing and we are really pleased with where we are headed."
Tulsa was 10-8-3 a year ago and had a RPI ranking of No. 70.
"We talk a lot about laying the foundation, and creating an identity and a culture," Hale says. "We ask ourselves, 'Who do we want to be and how do we want to be known?' I think Tulsa was a good positive step in what that might look like."
The Razorbacks get a break before their next spring exhibition game. Arkansas is back in action on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. when Oklahoma State visits Razorback Field. The next week, April 14, is the date for the Alumni Game at 1 p.m. at Razorback Field.
Arkansas then closes its spring schedule April 21 at Oklahoma at 2 p.m. and April 28 against Southeast Missouri at 3 p.m. in Springfield.
