– The University of Arkansas softball team dropped game two of its weekend series at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs tied the three-game set with an 18-7 victory Saturday afternoon. In the loss, Devon Wallace
hit her 40th career home run and Stephanie Canfield
registered her second two-hit game of the weekend. With Saturday’s result, Arkansas falls to 27-23 overall and 5-15 in conference play.
The deciding game between Arkansas and Mississippi State will be played Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT). The Razorbacks are looking for their third-ever series win in Starkville and their first since the 2009 season. Fans can watch online with their RazorVision accounts or listen to the broadcast on KXUA 88.3 FM in Fayetteville.
Facing a four-run hole in the second inning, the Razorbacks posted their 21st inning of the season with five or more run. Jayme Gee
had the first of four RBI hits in the frame which also included singles from Parker Pocklington
and Clarisa Navarro
and a double off the bat of Canfield. Overall, Arkansas scored six runs with the help of five hits, three walks and an illegal pitch.
Mississippi State (36-16, 8-12 SEC) responded with a 10-run bottom half of the inning to re-establish the lead. Neither team scored in the third inning. Wallace stepped to the plate with one out in the fourth and delivered her team-leading 12th home run of the season, a solo shot to straight-away center. She and program-record holder Miranda Dixon are the only Razorbacks to reach 40 career home runs. The Bulldogs closed out the five-inning win with four runs in the fifth.
Following its weekend’s trip to Starkville, Arkansas will return to Bogle Park for its final four games of the regular season. The four-game home stand begins April 30 with a midweek matchup with Oklahoma, a re-scheduled game from earlier in the year. The Razorbacks close out the regular season May 2-4 with an SEC series against Florida.
