. – Alex Gochenour and Leigha Brown
kicked off competition for the University of Arkansas at the 2014 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, competing in the heptathlon on day one in Lexington.
Gochenour is sitting in second place following the first four events with 3,379 points, while Brown also represents the No. 8 Razorbacks in the top five with 3,253 points for a fifth-place standing.
In the first event of the day, the 100-meter hurdles, Gochenour crossed the finish line in 13.83 for a second-place finish to climb the leaderboard early. Brown’s season-best finish in 14.12 was good for a fourth-place finish to start the day strong.
A strong performance by both in shot put would put Gochenour and Brown in a comfortable position heading into the final event of the day. A first-attempt throw of 40-4.25 took down Gochenour’s previous personal record of 39-7 set at the Texas Relays earlier this season, but her second throw outdid the first as the sophomore went 40-6.5 for a third-place finish. Brown’s throw of 39-11 would give the freshman a third-place finish in shot put.
Despite a small stumble at the finish line, Gochenour picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter with a time of 25.42 to move the sophomore into second place overall on the day. Heading into the final three events of the heptathlon tomorrow, Gochenour trails the lead spot by just 277 points. Brown is in good position as she will look to move up from fifth during Friday’s final events.
Heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with long jump, javelin and the 800-meter beginning at 12:30 p.m. (CT). Tomorrow night prelims will take place for 800m, 200m and 400-meter hurdles, in addition to the 10,000-meter. For updates from the 2014 SEC Outdoor Championships, follow @RazorbackTF on Twitter.
