WACO, Texas - The No. 17 University of Arkansas women's cross country team won the 2011 NCAA South Central Regional meet Saturday at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas. The Razorbacks were paced by senior Kristen Gillespie who ran to a third-place individual finisher. With their victory, the Razorbacks clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
"It's always nice to win," head Lance Harter said. "It was really nice to see the kids follow the race plan and beat a very competitive field. The University of Texas is a very good team. After getting second at the conference meet, it was nice to come back and grab the win for some momentum going into nationals. Now it's a matter of staying healthy and confident because I think this group can surprise some people."
Arkansas now has 16 regional team titles to its credit and its first South Central crown since the 2008 season. By advancing to the national meet, the Razorbacks will be making their 24th appearance at the NCAA Championship.
Gillespie earned a bronze finish by posting a 6K time of 20:29.3. The Razorbacks' next three runners all crossed together, led by a ninth-place finish from Kaitlin Flattmann and her time of 21:03.1. Jillian Rosen and Dominique Scott placed 10th and 11th, respectively. Rosen posted a time of 21:06.6 while Scott followed in a time of 21:09.7.
The Razorbacks' top-five scoring lineup was rounded out by Stephanie Brown who turned in a time of 21:26, good for 16th place overall. Arkansas' remaining runners were Jessica Jackson in 17th place at 21:28 and Keri Wood in 29th place in 21:55.4.
Six of Arkansas' seven entrants received All-South Central Region accolades Saturday. Gillespie, Flattmann, Rosen, Scott, Brown and Jackson were all recognized for their respective performances. Silje Fjortoft of SMU won the individual title and Texas, the race runner-up, secured the other automatic team bid.
The 2011 NCAA Championship will be run Nov. 21 at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. For more information regarding Razorback cross country or University of Arkansas athletics, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
