FAYETTEVILLE - Lance Harter, head coach of the University of Arkansas women's cross country and track and field teams, has been named the 2011 South Central Region Women's Coach of the Year as announced Wednesday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This marks the 14th regional coaching award for Harter, now in his 22nd season with the Razorbacks.
At the 2011 NCAA South Central Regional meet, Arkansas ran to a first-place finish to win the program's 16th regional team title and its first since the 2008 season. Harter's last won South Central Region Coach of the Year in 2008. The Razorbacks' victory clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, the program's 24th all-time appearance at the national meet.
Since the regional meets were first conducted in 1982, Arkansas has been among the top-three times every season and has earned one of the two automatic bids to the NCAA Championship on 23 occasions. Arkansas will be making its 19th appearance at the national meet under Harter.
During the 2011 season, Harter has led Arkansas to three team titles and a trio of runner-up performances. At the SEC Championship, the Razorbacks finished in second place and junior Kristen Gillespie won the individual title. She went on to be named the SEC Runner of the Year while Kaitlin Flattmann was recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Year.
Arkansas will take a No. 14 national ranking into the NCAA Championship. The women's 6K race at the national meet will be run Nov. 21 at 11:58 a.m. (CT) on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
