FAYETTEVILLE - Kristen Gillespie and Kaitlin Flattmann have been recognized by the Southeastern Conference with the release of the league's year-end cross country awards. Gillespie is the 2011 SEC Runner of the Year while Flattmann was tabbed the conference's Freshman of the Year. League honors were announced Friday.
With her championship run at the conference meet, Gillespie won the 12th SEC individual title in program history and the team's first since the 2008 season. Spread among nine student-athletes, this marks the 12th time an Arkansas runner has earned Runner of the Year honors. En route to her victory, Gillespie turned in a 6K course-record time of 20:19.84. Through the first five races of the season, she has been the team's top finisher in the past three meets.
"I'm not even sure (Gillespie) ran cross country in high school," head coach Lance Harter said. "She's evolved tremendously, especially in the last year. She came up to me after the race and said 'do you realize I ran a minute slower last year on a much, much easier course?'"
Flattmann was the top freshman scorer at the SEC Championship and was Arkansas' second finisher at the conference meet. In a season-high finish within the Razorback lineup, she posted a time of 21:04.29 which was good for a 13th-place overall finish. Flattmann has appeared in Arkansas' scoring lineup three times during the 2011 season. The Benton, La., native is the seventh runner in program history to earn SEC Freshman of the Year honors.
"Both of our freshmen had superb races," Harter said. "I think it was one of the more aggressive races they've run. Both Kaitlin and Jessica (Jackson) stuck their noses in the lead pack, which was sizeable. They were able to stick with it and, through the law of attrition, were able to hang on."
The Razorbacks finished second at Monday's conference meet. As a team, Arkansas collected 61 points and placed all five runners in its scoring lineup inside the top 17. Including Gillespie and Flattmann, the Razorbacks' top five featured Jackson (14th place), Stephanie Brown (16th) and Jillian Rosen (17th). Brown was last year's SEC Freshman of the Year.
The Razorbacks return to action Nov. 12 for the 2011 NCAA South Central Region Championship at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas. For more information regarding Razorback cross country or University of Arkansas athletics, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
