TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - By way of its regional victory, the No. 14 University of Arkansas women's cross country team earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Cross Country Championships which will be run Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6,000-meter race at the national meet is scheduled for an 11:58 a.m. (CT) start at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course.
"We had been in a drought for the past two years after finishing third at the regional meet," head coach Lance Harter said. "Now it's a matter of getting out there and keeping your wits about you and realizing that this is the national stage. We have to appreciate it because you can't take anything like this for granted. The quality of competition is getting stronger every year."
The Razorbacks will be making their 24th team appearance at the NCAA Championships and their first since the 2008 season. Arkansas is one of 31 teams in the field at the national meet. In team history, Arkansas has four runner-up team finishes (1991-93, 1999) at the NCAA Championships and 15 All-Americans.
In its last outing, Arkansas won the NCAA South Central Regional in Waco, Texas. The victory represented the Razorbacks' 16th regional team title and first since 2008. The team's scoring lineup featured senior Kristen Gillespie, freshman Kaitlin Flattmann, senior Jillian Rosen, freshman Dominique Scott and sophomore Stephanie Brown.
Last week when USTFCCCA regional awards were announced, Harter was named the South Central Region Women's Coach of the Year. The selection marked the 14th regional coaching award for Harter, now in his 22nd season with the Razorbacks.
A live webcast of the NCAA Championships will be broadcast on NCAA.com beginning at 11 a.m. (CT). In addition, highlights from the national meet will be included as part of the CBS NCAA Fall Seasonal Show scheduled to air Sunday, Dec. 25.
