– The University of Arkansas women’s cross country team returns to competition Saturday morning for the First to the Finish Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. The 5K race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. (CT) at the Missouri Southern course at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex. Saturday’s race will be the third of the season for the Razorbacks.
“We’re going to take some of our young (runners),” head coach Lance Harter
said. “This will give them another chance to run and get a little more racing experience. They’ll also have a chance to run up front where they’ve been chasing their teammates in prior meets this season.”
Arkansas is set to have five runners entered into the Missouri Southern race with a lineup of Rachel Carpino
, Codi Fritchie, Amanda Porter
, Valerie Reina
and Kelsey Wheelhouse
. Fritchie and Porter will be making their season debuts wearing the Razorback jersey. Carpino, Reina and Wheelhouse were part of the team’s first-place effort last weekend at the adidas/UCI Invitational.
Following their victory in Irvine, Calif., the Razorbacks moved up two spots and are ranked ninth in this week’s release of the USTFCCCA coaches’ poll. Arkansas is one of three teams from the SEC inside the national top 30. In regional rankings, the Razorbacks remain the top-ranked team in the South Central Region.
The remainder of Arkansas’ 2012 schedule includes the Greater Louisville Classic (Sept. 29), Chile Pepper Festival (Oct. 13), SEC Championship (Oct. 26), NCAA South Central Region Championship (Nov. 9) and NCAA Championship (Nov. 17). The Chile Pepper Festival and Regional Championship will be contested at Agri Park, Arkansas’ home facility.
