FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas women's cross country team returns to action Saturday morning with the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. The women's 5K race is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. (CT) start.
"We'll take a select group of freshmen and sophomores to compete in Joplin," head coach Lance Harter said. "This weekend gives an opportunity for some of our youngsters to carry the team flag and compete against some good teams."
At the season-opening Arkansas Invitational, the Razorbacks ran to a perfect team score of 15 in a dual victory over Missouri Southern at Agri Park in Fayetteville. Arkansas took the top six individual spots and placed all 10 runners inside the top 13. Jessica Jackson, in her collegiate debut, won the 4K race. In order, the top-five lineup was Jackson, Dominique Scott, Jillian Rosen, Cali George and Keri Wood.
For her performance, Jackson was named the SEC Co-Freshman Runner of the Week. She shared the weekly honor with Grace VanDeGrift of Florida. Arkansas last competed at the MSSU Stampede during the 2009 season.
The Razorbacks continue to receive votes in the Sept. 13 release of the USTFCCCA national rankings. Arkansas is the second-highest SEC team in the poll behind defending conference champion Florida. In the South Central region, the team is ranked No. 2.
Arkansas will make the quick turnaround from the MSSU Stampede and return to the course Sept. 23 for the Inter-Regional Bubble Buster in Toledo, Ohio. For more information regarding Razorback cross country or University of Arkansas athletics, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
