FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas women's cross country team travels to Toledo, Ohio, to compete Friday in the Inter-Regional Bubble Buster. The 4K race is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. (CT) start at Ottawa Park. With the cancellation of last weekend's Missouri Southern Stampede, this meet marks the Razorbacks' second competition of the season.
"One of the selection processes (to the NCAA Championship) is an at-large bid," head coach Lance Harter said. "Part of that is done by wins over opposition outside of your region. So there are eight teams that either barely made the national meet last year or were on the outside looking in, like ourselves last year. So those teams are brought together and we're going to have a head-to-head competition."
Friday's meet will consist of eight teams from five regions. The Razorbacks will be joined by the teams from Baylor, Columbia, Eastern Michigan, Ohio State, San Francisco, host and No. 29 Toledo and No. 19 West Virginia. All eight teams are ranked within the top 11 of their respective region.
Razorback runners scheduled to make their season debuts in Toledo include seniors Kristen Gillespie and Samantha Learch, sophomore Stephanie Brown and freshman Kaitlin Flattmann. The rest of Arkansas' lineup is also set to feature Michaela Bauer, Courtney Falco, Cali George, Jessica Jackson, Jillian Rosen, Dominique Scott, Samantha Thompson and Keri Wood.
In the Sept. 20 release of the USTFCCCA national poll, Arkansas is receiving votes and sits just two spots out of the top 30. The Razorbacks also continue to be the No. 2 team in the South Central region. Last weekend, Arkansas was scheduled to compete at the Missouri Southern Stampede. However, due to inclement weather in Joplin, Mo., and continued delays, the meet was cancelled.
