FAYETTEVILLE - Kristen Gillespie and Jessica Jackson, members of the No. 11 University of Arkansas women's cross country team, have garnered weekly Southeastern Conference accolades. Gillespie was tabbed the SEC Co-Runner of the Week while Jackson continued her grip on SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
Gillespie paced Arkansas at the Notre Dame Invitational with a fifth-place individual performance. She crossed the finish line with a 5K time of 17:10 to lead the Razorbacks to a second-place team finish at the meet. The 5K time for Gillespie is the third fastest by an SEC runner this season. With its runner-up effort, Arkansas placed ahead of four nationally ranked teams including No. 2 New Mexico. Gillespie shares the weekly honor with Logan Waites of Ole Miss.
"This is a well-deserved award for Kristen Gillespie," head coach Lance Harter said. "She probably ran her best race in cross country. She's a young lady that comes from a true middle-distance background so distance running isn't her forte by any stretch but it's becoming so."
Jackson was the second freshman finisher in the field at the Notre Dame Invitational. She finished 26th overall with a 5K time of 17:33 and was the third Razorback to cross the finish line. Jackson currently holds the top freshman 5K time in the SEC this season. This marks the third SEC honor for Jackson in as many competitions.
"It seems that Jessica Jackson has a bit of a strangle hold on the Freshman of the Week honors," Harter said. "This is her third. She leads a group of three very good freshmen that have become absolute mainstays in our lineup this season. Jessica has held off the other two race by race so far but it hasn't been easy because Kaitlin Flattmann and Dominique Scott are having spectacular freshman seasons, as well."
Arkansas continues its rise up the national rankings with this week's release of the USTFCCCA poll. The Razorbacks climbed seven spots to a season-high No. 11 ranking after their runner-up effort at the Notre Dame Invitational. Arkansas also moved into the top spot of the South Central region rankings for the first time this season.
After consecutive weekends on the road, the Razorbacks will take the week off before returning to action Oct. 15 at the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville. The collegiate women's 6K race is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. (CT) start at Agri Park.
