FAYETTEVILLE - The No. 11 University of Arkansas women's cross country team competes Saturday morning at the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville. The women's collegiate 6K race is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. (CT) start at Agri Park. Saturday's race will mark the fourth competition of the season for the Razorbacks.
"We're glad to be home," head coach Lance Harter said. "We were able to upgrade the competition. This is a great regional meet so we'll come away with a good idea of where we stand at the regional level. We'll also see how we rate at a national level because Texas and Oklahoma State are quite capable of beating anyone on any given day."
In its last outing, Arkansas turned in a runner-up performance at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. For the second straight year, the Razorbacks were led at the event by senior Kristen Gillespie. Along the way, the team finished ahead of four ranked teams. All five of Arkansas' scorers-Gillespie, Stephanie Brown, Jessica Jackson, Dominique Scott and Kaitlin Flattmann-finished inside the top 33.
For their respective efforts at the Notre Dame Invitational, Gillespie and Jackson received weekly accolades from the Southeastern Conference. Gillespie was the Co-Runner of the Week while Jackson was named Freshman of the Week for the third time in as many meets. This season, Arkansas' top seven has also included seniors Cali George and Jillian Rosen.
The Razorbacks will be one of three ranked teams in Saturday's race. Arkansas enters the meet as the highest ranked team at No. 11, followed by No. 17 Texas and No. 29 Oklahoma State. Texas Tech is also receiving votes in the most recent national poll. The Chile Pepper field features five of the top-six teams from the South Central region with Arkansas, Texas, SMU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Baylor.
"This festival atmosphere is very unique," Harter said. "This is a very unique and special place and we're real proud to have it in Fayetteville, Arkansas."
The awards ceremony for the collegiate races is set for 11:05 a.m. The women's collegiate 6K is just one of 10 races on the 2011 Chile Pepper Festival schedule. The event will also feature an Open division race, a fun run/walk and six junior high and senior high school races.
