FAYETTEVILLE - The 14th-ranked University of Arkansas women's cross country team returns to action Monday morning with the running of the 2011 Southeastern Conference Championship meet. The women's 6K race is set for a 10 a.m. (CT) start at the Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville, Tenn.
"As always, we're excited about this year's meet," head coach Lance Harter said. "It's a situation where there are three nationally ranked teams in the race with Florida, Vanderbilt and ourselves. For us, we have a sophomore, three freshmen and our lone senior to make up our top five so far this season. That could change on any given day and we're counting on our seniors to step up and handle the challenge."
Last season in Columbia, S.C., the Razorbacks finished as the SEC runner-up by one point. The team returns five of its top-seven finishers from that race. Collectively, Arkansas has won 13 SEC cross country team titles (1991-95, '98-02, '06-08) and 11 individual titles spread among eight runners.
In the Oct. 19 release of the USTFCCCA national poll, Arkansas finds itself as the No. 14 team in the country. Vanderbilt, ranked third in the nation, enters the SEC meet as the highest-ranked conference team in the field. After being ranked for a majority of the season, Florida is receiving votes in the most recent poll and sits just one spot out of the nation's top 30.
The Razorbacks last competed Oct. 15 at the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville. Behind a sixth-place individual run by senior Kristen Gillespie, Arkansas finished second in the team race. She finished the 6K race in a time of 20:24.7. Including Gillespie, the Razorbacks' scoring lineup featured Jessica Jackson, Stephanie Brown, Cali George and Jillian Rosen.
For the fourth time in as many races this season, Jackson was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for her performance at Chile Pepper. Her time of 20:56 is the top freshman 6K effort in the SEC.
