FAYETTEVILLE- The University of Arkansas softball team defeated Marion Military Institute by a score of 12 - 0 Saturday at Bogle Park.
The Razorbacks collected 12 runs on 17 hits including five extra base hits. Head coach Mike Larabee was pleased with the offensive showing.
“It took a little while for the bats to get going,” coach Larabee said. “But once we did, we had some improved base running and I think everyone we put into the game had a great energy and contributed in a positive way.”
Clarisa Navarro got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth with a triple into right-center. She scored on the next pitch when Nicole Schroeder hit a bloop double into left field. The Razorbacks would then rattle off five consecutive hits including a two-run double by Amanda Geile. After Kelly Young walked to break up the hit streak Amanda Summerford would begin another with a RBI double. Devon Wallace added to the lead with a two-run single, boosting her RBI total to four on the fall season. Jenifer Rambo would end the hit parade with a two-out, two-run triple to cap a nine-run fourth inning for the Razorbacks.
Navarro would again lead of an inning with a triple, this time in the sixth. She scored her second run of the day on an Andrea Sullivan sacrifice fly. The offensive onslaught continued with an RBI single from Jayme Gee and then a sacrifice fly from Sierra Bronkey, making the score 12-0 Arkansas. Larabee talked about his shortstop, Clarisa Navarro after the game.
“Navarro is a very special player,” coach Larabee said. “She is a five-tool kid. She can hit for average and power. She has got one of the strongest arms in the nation and can pick it defensively. She can be pretty special.”
Freshman Kelly Young worked three scoreless innings to start the game. She allowed two hits while striking out two and did not allow a run. Young then gave way to sophomore Kimmy Beasley who turned in a dominant performance on the mound. Beasley struck out six and did not allow a hit. She has now pitched six scoreless innings this fall.
The Razorbacks will continue their fall schedule Wednesday, Oct. 3rd at 3:00 p.m. in a double header vs. Butler Community College. The games will take place at Bogle Park and admission is free to all fans.
