NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Behind a pair of top-10 individual performances, the No. 12 University of Arkansas women's cross country team ran to a runner-up finish Friday morning at the 2012 Southeastern Conference Championships at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn. The Razorbacks were led by a fifth-place overall finish by Grace Heymsfield and a 10th-place effort from Andrina Schlaepfer. Arkansas finished with four runners inside the top 20.

"I think it's important to emphasize how well our top-nine finishers ran," head coach Lance Harter said. "We had some really good performances and big breakthroughs with four in the top 20 and seven in the top 30 in today's race but when one of your top runners (Semehar Tesfaye) goes down and doesn't finish, that's a tough thing to overcome in a competitive field."

For her finish within the top seven of Friday's race, Heymsfield earned a spot on the All-SEC First Team. The Razorbacks totaled two spots on the All-SEC Second Team with the performances from Schlaepfer and Diane Robison. Schlaepfer, the second freshman to cross the finish in Friday's race, was also a member of the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Heymsfield was the Razorbacks' front runner for the first time this season with her fifth-place individual finish. Coming off a redshirt season in 2011, the Elkins, Ark., native navigated the 6K course in a time of 20:39.64. She was followed by Schlaepfer who finished her first collegiate conference race in 20:54.37. She finished ahead of Robison who was 11th overall with a time of 20:56.40. She was also making her SEC cross country debut.

Arkansas' top five was rounded out by Keri Wood in 18th place and Shannon Klenke in 26th place. Wood posted a time of 21:18.53, while Klenke crossed the finish line in a 6K time of 21:25.99. Friday's results marked the first appearance for Wood and Klenke in the Razorbacks' top five since the season-opening dual meet in Fayetteville.

The remainder of the team's lineup featured Jessica Kamilos in 27th place at 21:27.41, Paige Johnston in 29th at 21:31.36, Rachel Carpino in 43rd at 21:42.73 and Kaitlin Flattmann in 57th at 21:57.94. Semehar Tesfaye, the Razorbacks' lead runner in three races this season, did not finish the competition.

Friday's race marked the start of the championship season for the Razorbacks. The postseason schedule continues Friday, Nov. 9 on Arkansas' home course as Agri Park will serve as the site of the 2012 NCAA South Central Championships. The collegiate season comes to a close Saturday, Nov. 17 with the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky.
