FAYETTEVILLE – Former Razorback All-American Loyd Phillips was presented the Outland Trophy for his performance in the 1966 season Thursday evening during the Outland Trophy Award Dinner in Omaha, Neb.

The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best lineman in college football since 1946, but only recently has there been an actual trophy presented. Each year the Downtown Rotary Club selects a former winner who did not receive an actual trophy to be recognized and presented with a trophy.

Phillips, who lettered for the Razorbacks from 1964-66, was the school’s first two-time All-American having earned the honor in 1965 and 1966. He was part of the 1964 national championship team and made nine tackles in Arkansas’ 10-7 victory over Nebraska in the 1965 Cotton Bowl which helped clinch the national title. Arkansas was 29-3 in his three seasons, while also capturing the Southwest Conference championships in 1964 and 1965.

Phillips finished his career at Arkansas with 304 tackles, including a 22-tackle performance against Tulsa. In addition to being named a two-time All-American, Phillips was also a three-time All-Southwest Conference pick and was selected 10th overall in the 1967 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. Phillips was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

The 2012 Outland Trophy winner was Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel. Others recognized at the dinner were Rex Burkhead (Gus Chamberlin Trophy), Sean Fisher (Tom Noval Trophy), and Baker Steinkuhler (Cletus Fischer Native Son Award).
