COLUMBUS, Ohio -- University of Arkansas junior swimmer Sigrun Sverrisdottir broke the Icelandic National Record in the 400 meter freestyle Saturday afternoon while competing at the Columbus Grand Prix in Columbus, Ohio.
Sverrisdottir, a native of Reykjavik, Iceland, is swimming unattached at the long course meet. She clocked a finals time of 4:20.42 to finish 18th out of 44, and break the national record of her home country. The previous record of 4:22.56 was set by Ingibjörg Arnardóttir in 1991.
Razorback freshman Julia Banach is also competing at the Columbus Grand Prix, and finished sixth on Saturday in the A final of the 200 meter breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:33.84. Against a field of 42 swimmers, Banach was also sixth in the preliminary race, clocking 2:35.03.
Banach and Sverrisdottir were also both in action on Friday. Banach swam the 100 meter breaststroke and placed 17th with a season-best time of 1:12.79, after a time of 1:13.34 in the preliminaries. Sverrisdottir swam the 200 meter freestyle and placed 39th with a time of 2:08.20, her only swim of the day.
Sverrisdottir, one of the top Icelandic swimmers in the world, has also held the Icelandic records in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. She will compete in the 800 freestyle on Sunday, March 11, the final day of competition at the Columbus Grand Prix.
