From The Pool Deck provides a look at the 2014 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships straight from the student-athletes who will be participating. Each day of the meet will be covered by an Arkansas swimmer in Minneapolis, Minn., for the championship meet.

Day four has been covered by sophomore Anna Mayfield.

Sophomore Anna Mayfield (San Antonio, Texas) attended the NCAA Championships last season and contributed to three different relay events. Mayfield swam in the 500 freestyle yesterday, and will also compete in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and relay events.

Hello Razorback Nation,

Today was our first day of competition here in chilly Minnesota. Right away our parents started calling the Hogs from the stands, even receiving a shout-out from the announcer! We had three individual swims and a relay. Altogether, it was a pretty average day of swimming. We got our first-race jitters out of the way this morning and could relax a little more the rest of the day.

After enjoying a nice lunch in our hotel with our roommates we had some down time and also some time to visit with our families. It was really great getting to chat with my family, taking my mind off of swimming and seeing my biggest fans and supporters. Eventually we headed back to the pool before the finals session to loosen up and get further ready for our races tomorrow.

While some of us were in the pool swimming, they started the opening ceremonies. There was a film with a collection of footage and photos from memorable moments in past championships. To top it off, they set the stage for the national anthem with a smoke and light show from the diving platforms. The entire diving well was covered with smoke and the fans and swimmers waved their glow sticks around in anticipation of the first finals session.

We headed back to the hotel and grabbed food on the way, eating dinner and watching some NCAA basketball together. Overall it was a great start to the meet, and we’re looking forward to the next two days of swimming!
