FAYETTEVILLE - The distance crew for the No. 6 University of Arkansas men's track and field team opened competition Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. David Flynn paced the Razorbacks' efforts with a personal-best performance and an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the conclusion of the decathlon, Gunnar Nixon led Arkansas with a fourth-place finish in the two-day, 10-event competition.

Running in the Olympic development section of the event, Flynn turned in a time of 8:49.20. The time is a slight improvement of his previous best of 8:49.24 run earlier this season at the Stanford Invitational. Flynn entered the weekend with the No. 5 time in the nation in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Teammate Rick Elliott finished the race in a time of 9:02.15, good for 21st place in the field.

Nixon was fourth overall in the decathlon, and third collegiate finisher, with a total of 7,660 points. His score is the second-highest figure in school history, trailing only teammate Kevin Lazas on the program's all-time list. In ninth place, Terry Prentice established a personal best in the decathlon with 7,326 points. Auston Chen rounded out Arkansas' decathlon results with 12th-place finish and 6,954 points.

The Razorbacks began the day with five competitors in the decathlon but neither Lazas nor Nathanael Franks finished the event. Lazas did not post a clearance in the pole vault while Franks pulled out after a miscue in the 110-meter hurdles.

In the Razorbacks' final event of the day, Lane Boyer and Eric Fernandez competed in the invitational section of the 10,000 meters. Boyer was Arkansas' top finisher with his time of 29:29.52 and 14th-place showing. Fernandez came through in 24th place with a time of 30:05.51.

Arkansas is scheduled to close out competition at the Mt. SAC Relays with Duncan Phillips in the invitational section of the 1,500 meters. The race is scheduled for a 9:06 p.m. (CT) start at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. Action at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville also begins Friday with the hammer and discus competitions.
