JENKS, Okla. – The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team tallied 10 personal-best times on day two of the Speedo Sectional Championships in Jenks, Okla. Arkansas advanced six into the evening finals with three top-10 finishes.
The top-finisher for the Razorbacks was freshman Lyndsie Gibson who earned spots in multiple ‘A’ finals after two top-eight finishes off two personal-best swims. To start Gibson picked up a seventh-place finish in the 100 back with a personal-best time of 56.03. She returned to the pool in the next event to take a first-place finish in the 500 free prelims with a time of 4:56.63. In the finals Gibson took eighth-place in the 100 back with a time of 57.27 and second overall in the 500 free with a time of 4:53.68, breaking her personal best for the second time today and shaving nearly three seconds off.
“Lyndsie did an outstanding job racing tonight and has a big day ahead of her tomorrow,” assistant swimming coach Todd Mann said. “Erika also had a great 200 breast tonight. We are looking for strong finishes for the final day of competition tomorrow.”
Junior Shelby Cox concluded the 50 free prelims with a 23.87, seeding her third going into the evening finals. Cox would finish with a time of 24.03 in the ‘A’ final to place fifth overall for Arkansas. Cox also advanced to the ‘B’ finals in the 100 back with a prelim time of 58.22. The junior returned to the pool to put up a 58.70, finishing 16th overall.
Freshman Erika McGovern snagged a personal-best in the 200 breast with a time of 2:25.65 in the morning prelims, as she finished 10th overall. She returned in the final, clocking a new personal-best time of 2:24.41 for 11th overall.
Senior Courtney Hubbard also competed in the 500 free finals as she nabbed a top-16 finish in the morning, advancing to the evening finals where she finished 15th overall.
Arkansas returns to the pool tomorrow at 9 a.m. for the final day of the Speedo Sectionals.
