NEW YORK, N.Y. – The No. 4 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team posted two top-three championships finishes and four personal-best performances Friday on day one of the 2013 Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York. The Razorbacks capped their day with a runner-up finish and the No. 3 time in school history in the distance-medley relay. Arkansas also picked up an event qualifier with Gwendolyn Flowers at 400 meters.

“Overall we had a successful day,” head coach Lance Harter said. “We had some big breakthroughs today with Gwendolyn and Sparkle in the 400 meters. We also got a big jump from Tamara Myers in the long jump. In the DMR, we had some very good legs. We just came up short at the end against a good Villanova team that ran the new national leader.”

In the team’s final race of the day, the distance-medley relay quartet of Grace Heymsfield, Regina George, Martine Borge and Dominique Scott combined for a time of 11:04.93 and a second-place finish. The time is the third-fastest performance in school history. The top-five DMR times in school history have now all been run on the New York track. With Friday’s results, Arkansas has the No. 3 time in the NCAA this season.

The Razorbacks collected three top-10 finishes in the championship section of the 1,000 meters, led by a fifth-place performance from Keri Wood who crossed in a time of 2:48.93. Arkansas’ results were rounded out by Paige Johnston in seventh place at 2:49.96 and Jessica Kamilos in ninth at 2:50.42, a personal-best time by four seconds for the Razorback sophomore.

Tamara Myers established a personal best in the long jump, getting out to a mark of 6.13m/20-1.5 for her second 20-foot jump of the season. For her result, she finished in eighth place of the event’s championship section. In the pole vault, the Razorbacks had two top-eight finishes with Sandi Morris in third place at 4.10m/13-5.25 and Danielle Nowell in eighth at 4.00m/13-1.5.

Having qualified with the 11th-fastest time during the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles, Ivanique Kemp finished in 15th place in the final of the event. She clocked a time of 8.53 in the section one of the two-section final. Kemp had a time of 8.44 in the qualifying rounds. Makeba Alcide also competed Friday, posting a time of 8.65 during the preliminary round of the hurdle event.

Flowers qualified for Saturday’s final of the 400 meters. Running in heat seven, the Razorback senior clocked a personal-best time of 53.79 to win her heat and finish as the fourth-fastest qualifier. Tomorrow’s final will be run at 3:20 p.m. (CT). The Razorbacks also saw the debut of transfer Sparkle McKnight who had a time of 54.52, good for 11th place in Friday’s prelims. She missed advancing to the final by one spot.

In the team’s first field results of the day, Kirsten Hesseltine finished in third place in the college section of the high jump with a final clearance of 1.75m/5-8.75 and Megan Zimlich was fourth in the college section of the pole vault with a final clearance and personal-best mark of 3.90m/12-9.5.
