FAYETTEVILLE - The No. 6 University of Arkansas women's track and field team racked up eight event victories at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks had wins from Tiffany Hines at 100 meters, Gwendolyn Flowers at 200 meters, Regina George at 400 meters, Martine Borge at 800 meters, Ivanique Kemp in the 100-meter hurdles, Tina Sutej in the pole vault and 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
In her first open race of the outdoor season, George powered past the field in a personal-best time of 52.05 to win the 400 meters. With her performance, she currently leads the Southeastern Conference in the event and ranks No. 2 in the NCAA. Her previous best of 52.31 came last season at the NCAA West Preliminary.
She was also part of both Razorback relays that posted season-best times Saturday. She teamed with Flowers, Hines and Whitney Jones to win the 4x100-meter relay in 44.09, the third-fastest time in program history. In the final event of the day, Flowers, George, Jones and Chrishuna Williams combined for a season-best time of 3:33.94 to win the 4x400-meter relay.
Sutej, the two-time NCAA indoor champion, continued her winning ways with a final clearance of 4.42m/14-6 in the pole vault. The outcome extends her season winning streak to eight competitions, dating back to the start of the indoor season. Sutej out-dueled former Razorback standouts April Steiner-Bennett and Katie (Stripling) Tannehill for the victory.
The Razorbacks collected wins in the short sprints via personal best from Hines in the 100 meters and Flowers in the 200 meters. Hines matched her career best with a time of 11.60 in her victory, while Flowers won the 200 meters in a career-best time of 23.76.
Borge and Kemp rounded out the Razorbacks' victory circle with their performances at 800 meters and in the 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Borge took more than a second off her previous best, crossing the finish line for the win in 2:06.54. In the preliminary round of the 100-meter hurdles, Kemp tied her wind-legal best of 13.20. She returned to the track to post a time of 13.24 in the event final.
For the second consecutive weekend, Kirsten Hesseltine established a career best in the high. The Razorback sophomore cleared the bar set at 1.75m/5-8.75 and finished second in the event. She improved upon her previous best of 1.73m/5-8 which she set last week at the UTEP Invitational. Other personal-best efforts came from Diane Robison (4:28.41) in the 1,500 meters and Chelsey Roberts (1.60m/5-3) in the high jump.
Late Friday night at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., the Razorbacks wrapped up the competition schedule with freshmen Dominique Scott and Kaitlin Flattmann in the 5,000 meters. Running in the 'A' section of the event, Scott finished the race in sixth place with a time of 16:12.69, the fastest ever by an Arkansas freshman. Flattmann crossed the finish line in a time of 16:50.06, good for 26th place.
The Razorbacks return to action April 26-28 with the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The team will also have select members of its field crew competing at Penn Relays in Philadelphia that same weekend.
