FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Razorback freshman Kimberley - Ann Surin fell to Tornado Ali Black on Friday in the first round of the US Open Juniors Qualifying by a score of 6-1, 6-2.

"Kim definitely felt the effects of limited match play out there today," Coach Hegarty said. "Even with the tough result, this was an invaluable experience and certainly will benefit Kim as she moves forward."

This marked the first time that a current Arkansas women's tennis player played in the US Open Juniors under Coach Hegarty. Surin was making her second straight appearance at the US Open Juniors after losing last year in the first round to Jules Elbaba, currently a freshman at the University of Virginia.

Surin qualified for the tournament by virtue of her ITF World Rank of 168. She was one of just three current college players to qualify for the event, held in conjunction with the Professional US Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

"There is nothing better than seeing a Razorback competing in the US Open," said Coach Hegarty.

The Razorbacks fall season continues when the team travels to the Little Rock Classic, held Sept. 21-23 in Little Rock, Ark.
