WACO, Texas – The No. 9 University of Arkansas men’s cross country team took the team title at the 2013 NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Friday behind a 1-2 photo-finish from Stanley Kebenei
and Kemoy Campbell
By winning the regional, the Razorbacks clinched a spot in the 2013 NCAA National Championship Meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
Kebenei and Campbell led the Razorbacks to the program’s 33rd NCAA Regional title with a total score of 34 points. In total, five Razorbacks finished in the top 16 to earn All-Region honors. The photo finish at the line came at a mark of 29:41.3, 11 seconds ahead of the third-place runner.
No. 25 Texas finished with 37 points in second place to also qualify for the national meet.
Kebenei claimed Arkansas’ 20th individual NCAA Regional title and it marked the second title under head coach Chris Bucknam
’s era at Arkansas.
“It was a great day. Kemoy and I have been talking about this meet for a while to be able to use it as a great preview for nationals,” Kebenei said. “This is my first season to run cross country with the Razorbacks, to be able to be a part of bringing this team to nationals is just great. It is a great day to be a Razorback.’
was the next Razorback to cross the finish line in sixth-place with a time of 30:10.7 to earn his third All-Region honor of his career. Sophomore Gabe Gonzalez
followed closely in ninth place with a time of 30:23.9 to earn his first All-Region honor. Rounding out the Razorbacks scoring lineup, senior David Flynn
finished with a time of 30:49.7, a mark good for 16th place and his second All-Region honor.
“Everything went as planned, I think our guys ran within themselves and didn’t rush to the finish line with a short eight day turnaround before the NCAA Championship Meet," Bucknam said. “20 kilometers is a lot of racing in eight days, we tried to maintain a good rhythm and sense of pace that was not going to be detrimental to our race next Saturday. I am really pleased with Flynn to be able step in and fill the void to be our fifth man and overall I am really proud of our efforts today.”
Razorbacks continued to cross the line when senior Raymond Joseph
clocked a time of 31:51.5 to earn him 45th place and sophomore Arch Robertson who crossed in 62nd place at 32:19.7.
The Razorbacks will return to the course on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Terra Haute, Ind., for the 2013 NCAA National Championships.
