STARKVILLE, Miss. – The University of Arkansas softball team opened its weekend road trip Friday with a 6-4 victory over Mississippi State. The Razorbacks were paced by home runs from Jayme Gee and Amanda Geile and a strong relief appearance from Kelly Young. With Friday’s result, Arkansas improves to 27-22 overall and 5-14 in conference play. Game two of the weekend set is scheduled for Saturday at noon (CT).

Gee put the Razorbacks on the scoreboard first with a two-run shot to left field in the second inning, scoring Kasey Fagan on the play ahead of her. The home run was her sixth of the season. She finished the game with a season-high three hits. Arkansas added three more runs in the third, capping the frame with another two-run homer from Geile. The inning got started with back-to-back doubles from Stephanie Canfield and Clarisa Navarro.

Canfield drove in the team’s sixth and final run with a single in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, the sophomore outfielder dropped a single into right center to plate Parker Pocklington. Canfield reached base in her first three plate appearances Friday.

Young entered the game with two outs in the fourth and a runner on first. After walking her first hitter face, she got a fly ball to retire the side and get out of the inning. During her 3.1 inning of work, Young allowed just three hits and didn’t allow any runs. Her two strikeouts came against the final two hitters of Friday’s game to earn her second relief win of the year and first since March 25.

Following its weekend’s trip to Starkville, Arkansas will return to Bogle Park for its final four games of the regular season. The four-game home stand begins April 30 with a midweek matchup with Oklahoma, a re-scheduled game from earlier in the year. The Razorbacks close out the regular season May 2-4 with an SEC series against Florida.
