Tubert wins match at WAPL

BANDON, Ore. - University of Arkansas sophomore-to-be Emily Tubert won her first round match to advance at the 35th U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.

Tubert qualified into the match play after making the cut after two rounds of stroke play where she shot 73-77=150.  She faced Mandi Morrow of Kent, Ohio, Wednesday winning 4 & 2.

The players opened square on the first hole on the Old Macdonald course and Morrow won the second hole when Tubert bogeyed the par three, 149-yard second.

Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native, squared the match on the third hole but gave it back when she struggled with a six on the par four fourth hole.  Morrow held the lead on the fifth hole but again the Razorback rallied with a birdie on the par five, 520-yard sixth hole to even the match.

Tubert settled in winning the seventh hole when Morrow bogeyed and she would never relinquish the lead.

Tubert moved to 2 up on the ninth hole as Morrow bogeyed again.  Tubert birdied the 12th going 4 up but bogeyed the 13th moving back to a three-hole lead.

Morrow would bogey the 16th hole giving Tubert a four-hole lead and the win in the round of 64.

Tubert faces Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y. in the round of 32.  Lee played to a 1 up win over Anna Hancock of Lakeland, Fla.  If Tubert wins her morning match over Lee, she faces the winner of Kelsey Chugg/Brianna Do in the afternoon.

Tubert won last year's event prior to coming to campus in the fall.
