Plasencia wins, Rees eliminated

ELGIN, S.C. Future University of Arkansas women's golfer Regina Plasencia moves on while former Razorback Corinna Rees was eliminated at the Trans National Amateur Championship at Woodcreek Golf Club in  Elgin, S.C., Thursday.

Plasencia, a native of Mexico, will join the Razorbacks as a freshman this fall.  She finished tied for fifth overall shooting a 147 in stroke play.  Plasencia posted a 71 in the first round and 76 on Tuesday to advance to match play.

Plasencia was one-under in the first round and four over on Tuesday.  She birdied the 12th hole on both rounds.

She defeated Courtney Fergusson of Houston, Texas, 3-2 in her first match of the tournament at Woodcreek in the round of 32.  Plasencia picked up 2-up win over Cyna Marie Rodrigez in the round of 32 Thursday morning.

Plasencia was square for the first two holes but won three, four and five taking a lead she would not surrender.  The Razorback freshman-to-be lead by as much as four before winning by two.

Plasencia continued to play well winning in the round of eight in Thursday's second round.  She defeated Tilly Poulsen 1-up to advance.  Tilly won the first hole but Plasencia squared the match on the second hole.  She went on to a two-up lead before Tilly rallied squaring the match again at the 12th hole.  Plasencia birdied 18, a par three 340 yard hole, to win the match.

Plasencia faces Rinko Mitsunaga at 8:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals as play continues.

Rees, a Pebble Beach, Calif., native and recent graduate, tied for 33rd overall in stroke play shooting 79-75=154.

Rees defeated Jayde Panos of Perth, Australia, 1-up in the first match.  She faced Hanules Sky Seo dropping her second round match 6 and 5 to be eliminated.
